'Waiting Space’ is an audio & visual project - and alias of musician, artist, and digital media designer, Chris Falconer - based in Waterford Ireland.
In both his musical and visual output, Chris’ work includes themes of ‘genius loci’ (‘spirit of place’); intertextuality / intermediality; media-manipulation; and the creative possibilities of now domestically-available advanced technologies.
These themes are informed by his qualifications in Art & Architectural History (MA & BA), Graphic Design (Prof Dip), Digital Media, and Data Analytics (both PGDipSci).
In most instances, his works begins as musical compositions (varying from cinematic neoclassical, to textural electronic, pieces) which are then ‘complemented’ by visuals which he creates in response (digital visualisations, animations, travel footage, and short films).
Pieces from the project have been commissioned by the Luan Gallery in Athlone, Ireland (two immersive soundtrack pieces for virtual walkthroughs of the gallery spaces, in 2020, and 2021), and also by Garter Lane Arts Centre, Waterford, Ireland (an audio/visual piece as part of their 'Courtyard Calibrations' programme) - while the Waiting Space piece 'Cocoon' was exhibited at Lismore Castle Arts, in Lismore, Waterford, Ireland in 2020 - and was 'Officially Selected' for the 16th Waterford Film Festival, in 2022, and was screened in the Odeon Cinema Waterford as part of the festival.
Waiting Space has received both national, and international radioplay - including, but not limited to, the stations: RTÉ Lyric FM, RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ 2FM, BBC Radio Ulster, Beat FM, WLR FM, KCLR FM, Red FM - and has also been invited to longform interviews on a number of radio shows, including for The Stephen McCauley Show on BBC Radio Ulster, 'The County Measure' documentary series on RTÉ Radio 1 with Vincent Woods, and ‘On The Fringe’ with Geoff Harris, and the 'DéiseToday' show with Damien Tiernan - both on WLR FM.
In addition to his creative work as Waiting Space - Chris has worked as the Marketing & Business Development Manager for his family's architectural practice, C.J. Falconer & Associates, since 2013.
Prior to this, Chris worked as part of a number of international art institutes and festivals - including the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (Venice, Italy), Lismore Castle Arts (Lismore, Waterford), and University College Cork Lewis Glucksman Gallery (Cork, Ireland). Chris was awarded the 2012 Culture Ireland Travel Bursary for his work at the Irish Pavilion - which funded independent research on Modernist, and contemporary architecture in Berlin, and New York. His particular fields of research include Modernist architecture, architectonics in art, and exclusionary historiography. During this time he also spoke at conferences, including University College Cork Art History Symposium 'Doubt & Visual Representation' - presenting an original paper of research on Irish Architect & Furniture Designer, Eileen Gray.
His visual arts career has developed in parallel to his lifelong love of music. Chris has been performing music live with various musical groups (as drummer, programmer, keyboardist, vocalist, and songwriter) since the age of 16. Non-Waiting Space projects during this time (2005-2011/2016-2018) featured in Hot Press and other national media, and also performed as part of a number of festivals, such as Indiependence, Cork Midsummer Festival, and a number of times at Waterford’s Sproai Festival, as well as on BalconyTV. During this time, Chris also acted as the manager and publisher for his acts, under the self-run record label, ‘Etto Records’ - releasing a number of physical, and streamable, e.p.s and singles. Chris additionally spent many years in musical theatre (including lead roles in De La Salle College productions of Les Miserables, and West Side Story) - as well as a number of variety shows in Wateford, and musicals during time at college in UCC - alongside performing with various choirs between 2001 and 2011.
